Imagine how you’d feel if you’d already read 500 applications and came to one that included a three-page cover letter.
In my last post, I wrote all about professional communication.
One topic I didn’t cover, however, was the dreaded cover letter. The cover letter is such a common and essential part of the job application process that it deserves its own post.
Indeed, the only people I write letters to these days are my grandma and Members of Congress, as well as the occasional handwritten holiday card. But while a well-crafted resume tells a prospective employer a lot about you, it can’t convey the following things: A cover letter lets you display all of the above and more.
So it’s no wonder that writing a cover letter feels hard–it’s not something we get to practice much. And that’s the way you should think of it: a cover letter isn’t a boring chore to “get through”.
Remember, the hiring manager isn’t reading just your application.
They’re reading hundreds or in some cases of others.
As the saying goes, any interaction you have with a prospective employer is an interview. I can’t cover every possible cover letter scenario, but I can give you some advice that applies no matter what job you’re applying for.
